Problems with Alcohol Based Hand Sanitizers in Schools

School systems across the United States currently face a potential deadly dilemma. The World Health Organization reports that nearly 40 new diseases have emerged in the last 30 years, and over 1100 epidemic events took place in the last 5 years alone. Given the current expanse of infectious diseases such as influenza, MRSA, C-Diff, etc., greater precautions need to be taken to protect our children.

The average school aged child contacts 4 or more colds per year, with each cold lasting 5 to 14 days. Unfortunately, the task of protecting children has become more difficult. In an attempt to combat these problems, hand sanitizers have been used in the schools to minimize the hand to hand spreading of germs. However, this approach introduces more problems of it own.

There have been a multitude of incidences across the country where children have tried to ingest these alcohol based hand sanitizers to get intoxicated. As a result, children have been getting sick, and in some cases, have had to be rushed to hospital emergency rooms for treatment. What’s more, the alcohol based sanitizers are flammable, and pose a fire hazard.

Currently alcohol based products dominate the hand sanitizer business. But due to the problems caused by the alcohol content, many schools have been forced to ban the hand sanitizer, leaving children with no means of protection, and no known alternatives.
Alcohol sanitizers have introduced even more problems than this. When the alcohol is applied to the skin it evaporates quickly, within 3 to 5 seconds. In this time the alcohol stops protecting against bacteria, dries and cracks the skin, making it more susceptible to collecting and spreading germs.

Fortunately, a solution to these problems has recently emerged. A new product is now on the market that is not flammable, does not dry and crack your skin when applied, and contains moisturizer that improves the health of your skin. The active ingredient, benzethonium chloride, is a positively charged molecule which stays on your negatively charged skin killing germs for up to 6 hours.
